I make it a point when I talk to young Black males to stress 2 things to them:

1. Read something everyday; newspaper, sales paper, magazine, book, comic book, dictionary(yes, I read the dictionary as a youngster and no, I am not a nerd), read something.
2. Always look the person they are talking to in the eyes. (I know it's sad but a former "white" manager taught me that back in the 70's. He said it shows you're not afraid, you are demanding respect, and you are letting the person you're talking to know you are on their level.)

I have always been like a surrogate mom to so many children especially my boys. I am sadden when I hear of such despair. My husband I try our best to help all over the world. Clearly this the reason why. You know there is a lot I can say about this situation alone. It is painful and shameful. I see some of the little young black boys that are running around doing absolutely nothing when I stop to speak and ask them simply things the eye contact is not there. I know in my heart they are so lost. I do this all the time you save a lot of people by just sharing, caring or asking.
