Nicole Bell

Sadly, for some it seems as though it’s not enough that William & Valerie Bell had to bury their beloved son at the ripe age of 23; or that Bell’s fiance’ Nicole Paultre-Bell wound up planning her future husband’s funeral on what should have been their wedding day, but now they are all the subjects of aggravated harassment, intimidation and threats.

The three detectives charged were acquitted by Judge Arthur Cooperman of all charges against them in this case, this past Friday. While many police officers simply rejoiced at the news and returned to their duties, others apparently decided to take it a step further and reportedly make harassing phone calls from of all places – the office of the Sergeants Benevolent Association.  NYC Police Department’s Internal Affairs Bureau is investigating.

In this day and age of Caller ID and many other technological advances, it amazes me that someone would be that foolish enough to even make these calls, let alone from the Sergeants Benevolent Association offices.  Click HERE to read more.

Congressman John Conyers, Chair of the House Judiciary Committee, met with the Bell family and local elected officials on Monday.  Conyers visited the scene of the shooting and is promising a thorough federal investigation. I sincerely hope so, as I feel that the police cannot objectively investigate themselves.  If one of two NYPD Members are found to have made these phone calls, what is the real punishment going to be?  And how will it give the Bell family any peace?

I applaud the Bell Family and even Rev. Sharpton for keeping the peace in Queens as many predicted that riots would ensue following the verdict.  I even passed the Queens County Criminal courthouse this past Friday after the verdict was handed down and reporters were camped out for hours after the verdict waiting for some sort of civil unrest that never came.  Can this family at least have some form of Human Rights and Dignity and finally be treated with respect?
