Parents of Daniel Hauser Agree to Chemo Treatments

By:  Lynn

Up to this point I’ve been silent on the case of Daniel Hauser, the young 13 year old who has Hodgkin’s lymphoma and whose mother recently took off with him in tow.

I’ve been silent because I have mixed emotions about this case.

1. I believe that his parents love him

2. I believe that his parents want to see him live out his life in good health and with strength

3. I believe that his mother has genuine concerns about chemotherapy. Chemo is NOT a great drug. It is NOT a cure for anything. And oftentimes, it makes things worse rather than better.

Had this mother refused any treatment from him in general, I’d be all over her. However, she took him for natural treatments from an Indian healer. That healer claims to have recovered as a result of taking the natural treatments. And perhaps he is telling the truth. What works for one person won’t necessarily work for another. And that’s with anything.

I know that when I had my fibroid tumors, I fasted, I prayed, I took herbs, I changed my diet. Nothing worked for me, short of surgery. Yet, for other women, natural methods worked and they were healed.

The parents—seeing that their son’s cancer is getting worse, has now agreed to chemotherapy. I wish them and their child the best blessings that God has to offer.

The parents of a Minnesota boy who refused chemotherapy for his cancer have told a judge they now agree to the medical treatment, and the judge ruled Tuesday the boy can stay with them.

Daniel Hauser, 13, has Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He and his mother missed a court appearance last week and left the state to avoid chemo and seek alternative treatments. Colleen and Anthony Hauser told a judge in Brown County District Court that they now understand their son needs chemotherapy.

This is a touchy subject for me. I have a problem with parents being forced to allow medical treatments that they do not spiritually believe in. It was recently brought to my attention that some Jehovah’s Witness parents were arrested a few years ago because they refused to allow a hospital to give their child a blood transfusion. I am not a Jehovah’s Witness, but I believe that if blood transfusions are against a person’s spiritual beliefs, then how dare someone force blood products on them! As Lynn pointed out in this article, chemotherapy is not a guaranteed cure. My father had a bout with cancer several years ago and ended up undergoing chemotherapy. It was the chemotherapy that almost took him out! The parents of this young man should be able to come to the decision that they think is best for their son and everyone else should abide by it. Even their son (Daniel Hauser) had repeatedly said that he did not want chemotherapy and supported his parents decision. Who knows, maybe all of the stress associated with the media coverage and being on the run may have made his medical situation worsen. I want to reiterate that I support this family’s decisions and wish them healing in the end.
