I’m just going to be honest here. I’m happy that Michael Phelps has been dropped by the Kellogg company. It’s not that I think that what he did was on par with murder or anything like that. But I happen to know that had it been any person of color, that person would have been dropped like a hot potato from every endorsement opportunity.
It’s time to see some equal treatment as well as punishment in this country.
Phelps had the world in his hands. What was his excuse for showing off at a party and smoking dope? I’ll tell you. He is irresponsible and feels entitled. This dose of reality is exactly what he needs. Maybe now he will come down from his high horse.
One bong hit seen around the world, and Olympian Michael Phelps is watching at least one contract go up in smoke. Kellogg will let the swimmer’s contract expire at the end of the month.
“We originally built the relationship with Michael, as well as the other Olympic athletes, to support our association with the U.S. Olympic team,” a Kellogg spokeswoman said in a statement. “Michael’s most recent behavior is not consistent with the image of Kellogg. His contract expires at the end of February and we have made a decision not to extend his contract.”
I plan to go out and buy a box of Corn Flakes to show support for Kelloggs in this!

American Idol
Tiger Woods
I so agree with you! I’m glad that Kelloggs is holding him accountable for his choices, not only for the reasons you listed but also because it’s high time for athletes and “super”stars to stop getting away with bad behavior just because of who they are or what they do. Since some folks who are blessed with great opportunities and skills can’t seem to self-regulate, even knowing all that’s at stake, I think this serves as great example for others-your dumb behavior just might cost you $$$$$
He is now suspended from professional swimming for the next 3 months: http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/02/06/2484312.htm
I am glad Kellogg’s did that. He does not deserve to walk away from this unscathed. On a personal note, I blogged about this when it first broke and when the sheriff said he’s looking into the matter, people came out of the woodwork in defense of Michael Phelps, which shows how little regard some people have for being on the right side of the law.
Grrrrrrrrrrreat!!! No special privileges for fish-boy. I wonder if his medals will be taken away, also.
Unfortunately, I think it’s going to take more than that to knock him off of his “high horse”. But, I’m glad to see that it is work in progress.
Welcome to Hicktown, Voice from the Battlefield. I don’t want to see Michael Phelps’ career destroyed over this but I definitely am glad something happened beyond a slap on the wrist.
I just came back from the grocery story. I purposely bought two boxes of Kelloggs’ brand cereal to support them for their decision.
If Michael committed a crime, he should be punished with the sanctions the law provides for that crime. Let the authorities handle that.
However, that is the extent of my feelings about what Michael did. He is not my kids’ role model on life issues. He is a mere mortal man with his own problems just like the rest of us. We have to tell our children that their best role models are us (their parents).
The only thing we should use Michael as a role model for is the message he sent (very successfully) that if you practice, practice, practice …. you can achieve your highest potential. That’s it!!
Michael did not put himself on a “high horse” the public put him there. His endorsements of products is just work and money for him. I’m not going to throw a stone at Michael because he has a problem in his personal life. All I look to these athletes for is their achievements in their career – nothing else.
It’s time to adjourn the court of public opinion on this issue.
