I meant endorphins. I found this more detailed explanation on chocolate.org.

Like other palatable sweet foods, consumption of chocolate triggers the release of endorphins, the body's endogenous opiates. Enhanced endorphin-release reduces the chocolate-eater's sensitivity to pain. Endorphins probably contribute to the warm inner glow induced in susceptible chocoholics.

Acute monthly cravings for chocolate amongst pre-menstrual women may be partly explained by its rich magnesium content. Magnesium deficiency exacerbates PMT. Before menstruation, too, levels of the hormone progesterone are high. Progesterone promotes fat storage, preventing its use as fuel; elevated pre-menstrual levels of progesterone may cause a periodic craving for fatty foods. One study reported that 91% of chocolate-cravings associated with the menstrual cycle occurred between ovulation and the start of menstruation. Chocolate cravings are admitted by 15% of men and around 40% of women. Cravings are usually most intense in the late afternoon and early evening.

Let's face it. Food is a pleasure. You can always find something you like and even worse, you can find a food group that you enjoy so much that you can just eat and eat and eat. Gluttony is easy to fall into. We have to make a conscious effort to control our bellies as opposed to allowing our bellies to control us!

It is quite possible that he is addicted to food. Some people don't realize that people can be addicted to food, just as they can become addicted to drugs, alcohol and sex. There are certain endorphin enhancers in some foods like chocolate that give one almost a high and they make you feel good. Which is why many women crave it during PMS.

Food addiction though, IMHO is more difficult to overcome than any other addiction because you actually HAVE to eat in order to survive.

If he hasn't already, he should consider some form of therapy to discover why he turns to food for comfort, stress relief, etc. Once he has an understanding of why, he can begin on some plan of action, but overcoming cravings and maintaining lifestyle changes still won't be easy if he is indeed a food addict.
