What’s this I’m hearing about Geico’s “Cavemen” show being racist? First of all, I find the cavemen commercials both silly and boring. I was really surprised—though I should not have been, to discover that an actual television show is being fashioned around that nonsense. Other than 5 – 8 year olds, who on earth would even watch it? I envision it as cartoonish at best.
The controversy:
But as the show’s pilot episode began circulating in Hollywood, so did a new round of criticism: that Cavemen trafficked in the very racial caricatures it was supposed to be lampooning. By depicting the Cro-Magnons as good dancers, great athletes and grand sexual partners, the show’s detractors argued, Cavemen was using black stereotypes for cheap racist laughs. ”We finally get to laugh at all the stereotypes in the world directed at cavemen, without feeling guilty,” wrote one Hollywood blogger. ABC’s decision to reshoot the pilot didn’t exactly help. Link
When you think of what a 30 minute television show may entail—when it’s about cavemen, it actually makes perfect sense that the show would not concentrate on important or “heavy” topics. Of course a silly show based on a silly topic will wrap itself around “breakdancing” and the like.
YAWN…I won’t be watching this one. Wake me when it’s over.
