First white “Miss Hampton”, Nikole Churchill seeks president’s support

misshamptonI needed a good laugh today.  Hampton University has its first white “queen” and all hell has broken loose.
But that’s not what I find funny. This letter that the new “queen” wrote to President Obama is what has me in stitches. LOL!

Note how disrespectful she is, referring to our president as “Mr.” instead of  using his title.

To:
President Barack Obama
October 11, 2009
Aloha Mr. Obama!
My name is Nikole Churchill, a senior nursing major at Hampton University. This past Friday October 9, 2009, I was honored to be crowned Miss Hampton University 2009-2010. It truly was the best night of my life! With that being said, I am sad to say…… that my crowning was not widely accepted and many negative comments regarding my win have been shared throughout my campus.
It would be much easier to say that possibly some were not accepting of the news because I wasn’t the most qualified contestant; however, the true reason for the disapproval was because of the color of my skin. I am not African-American. Despite the unfortunate beliefs that some are saying I should not have won, I am desperately trying to focus on those who believe in me and support me and my goal to represent this beautiful, multicultural campus the very best way that I can. I would love your help!
I am hoping that perhaps you would be able to make an appearance to my campus, Hampton University, so that my fellow Hamptonians can stop focusing so much on the color of my skin and doubting my abilities to represent, but rather be proud of the changes our nation is making towards accepting diversity. People are even nicknaming me, “lil Obama” because of various reasons. This is truly an honor as well!
I am also from Hawaii (Wahiawa) and I am hoping that you can assist me in opening some closed minds and help share some aloha spirit throughout my campus. I feel as though you could relate to my situation, which is why I immediately wanted to contact you. I was interviewed last night at the HU vs. HU football game by news channel 13 and I mentioned how individuals such as you and myself are making changes in hopes people can stop placing so much focus on our skin color by letting that define what we can, cannot, should, and/or should not do. Dr. Harvey welcomed me last night to the family with open arms and I was beyond honored when he told me that he is behind me 100%. I am proud to represent Hampton University and I am so proud having you to represent our home, our country. Your support with my crowning as Miss Hampton University 2009-2010 would be graciously appreciated. Please reply, I will be looking forward to it!

Am I missing something?  Uh….our president has nothing else to do with his time than to visit Hampton University to appease her?

Unbelievable!

She needs to go and sit down somewhere! BTW, that girl in the pink should have won…

    Wonder who the judges were…

I’m cracking up that the stank, side-eye looks, the contestants on the right are giving.

Now first of all coming from Hampton University, I’m really not surprised that there is a White homecoming queen this year. In fact, I’m surprised that it hasn’t happened sooner. This school seems to have either forgotten that it is an HBCU school or has in recent years become increasingly ashamed of black folks and black culture.

Do you remember back in 2006, when they banned students from wearing dreadlock, cornrows and certain natural hairstyles? If not, let me refresh your memory.

I’m not saying that this woman didn’t deserve the crown and that it should be based on skin color, but I just have to wonder what is going on in this institution and why the administration no longer seems to instill pride among it’s students.

Additionally, I also have to question the education these students are receiving because Miss Hampton didn’t even know how to properly write a letter to the Commander in Chief of our great nation. Certainly not a good look for Hampton and gives you insight into how and why HBCU enrollment is extremely low and these schools are becoming the laughing stock in all of academia.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with her representing the university. It would be quite prejudiced to not accept her because she is not African-American. If you didn’t run for the position then don’t worry about it. Support her or move on. Don’t get mad with her because she won! Ha! And for the girls who didn’t win-learn how to have humility and be gracious-wipe those snide looks off your faces.

Maybe it’s me or when they took the photo, but do the two girl on the right look pissed?

  6. southernVal says:

Yeah they do look a lil agitated Cop….hehehe! Wow, and I thought I’d heard it all. Oh, well….sign of the times?

Please know that as a student of Hampton University most students are not in support of her because of her skin color but rather because she clearly was not the best candidate! One of the reasons for her win was to promote diversity on our campus. With that being said, I have to COMPLETELY agree with divawidfevah, it seems that Hampton University has forgotten awhile ago that we are a HBCU. You surely do not see other institutions trying to diversify their campuses, they meet their “quotas” and that is it! The sad part of this story is that this girl was RECRUITED to do this pageant, so it seems that those in top positions at Hampton University already had it in their mind that she was to win. They do not care that no one feels that she does not properly represent the student body, for numerous reasons. But rather it seems that their hope is that she has the best chance of going the furthest in the Miss. Virginia and possibly the Miss.America pageants where Hampton University has not had a presence in a few years. As a Black woman at Hampton University it hurts, that even at our supposed beloved “Home by the Sea,” we are good enough to pay tuition, but NOT good enough to be the face of our own school.

not impressed with her at all or the letter it is very opportunistic…sorry, but she looks very plastic to me…Oh poor me I am being discriminated against…She knew that when she decided to run…Deal with it…no special medals…A couple of years ago a white guy won at Moorehouse; there was a little uproar, but he wasn’t whining about it…

The world is changing/changed; and the playing field should be leveled no matter where a person decides to go to school…Not mad about that, but am sad, because the HBCUs were started because we weren’t allowed to attend other university’s and it was for our self esteem and education and pride; that is the loss I feel; another one bites the dust….Let’s see if it will happen at Howard University…who used to have the paperbag test and wanted you to be almost white anyway:)

  9. Ms. Jackson says:

I currently attend Tuskegee University (and I’ve had relatives attending HBCUs across the country from Alabama A&M, Howard, Hampton to Clark Atlanta and Jackson State University) and I can’t help but to feel a little disappointed. I feel as if one of the main purposes for the creation of schools like Hampton (our sister school) was to give people of color the opportunity to hold positions such as “Miss Hampton” that they would have never been able to (and still won’t be able to) hold at predominately white institutes of education. I’m utterly appalled that she chose to attend an HBCU and expected anything less but an uproar when she won. We are still forced to and still choose to attend HBCUs to connect with other black people and get an education in our own comfort zone, so while we accept students of different ethnic backgrounds into our schools, how on earth would you expect us to be happy with a white girl representing us? She is not a representation of the largely black student population. Most of the students are there in the first place because they wanted to go somewhere where they would be visibly represented in such roles and this is a slap in the face. She should learn her role quickly because trying to play the reverse racism card at an HBCU could turn ugly quickly… especially if she’s trying to take this to the national level.

  10. divawidfevah says:

Good points Ms. Jackson and Welcome to Hicktown. I also agree with Oregonsistah. There is nothing wrong with white students attending HBCUs and we are seeing more and more of them attending these institutions.

I too don’t feel sorry for her and feel that she is playing the victim role to the hilt. I’m sure she encountered some adversity in being one of few white students at this school BEFORE she even decided to try out to become Miss Hampton.

I’m sure some of her white friends and family even gave her flack for attending an HBCU, so she shouldn’t be shocked that not everyone is happy that she won. She got what she wanted (the title and the attention) and like it or not, all the good and the bad that go along with the position.

I think it was silly of her to write to the President of the United States and try to use that line about them both being from Hawaii and both being victims of race. There are no real similarities here and our President has way more important matters on his plate.

What she should have done instead was sit down with the PRESIDENT OF HAMPTON UNIVERSITY and say, “How can we make this campus more diverse and inclusive?; and how can I as the University’s representative play a part in this?” This is what true leaders do. They look to solve problems in their own backyard and do not play the “whoa is me” game just to get national attention.

I received notification of this via FaceBook. I had to google to see if this was true. I guess I have to say it is a slap in the face. I live here in Atlanta where the AUC is and it is true an HBCU should be a place where blacks can connect and learn with pride WHY HBCU’s were instituted in this country. For Hampton (again based on comments above) to go and “recruit” this young lady is a slap in the face to all of the beautiful black women there @ Hampton. In 1988-92 when I wsa there there was PRIDE on campus and the ladies strutted their stuff. With this stunt, and that is saying lightly what it is, Hampton should be ashamed. The facts of our President decidng to run is amazingly different and for this woman to write him shows a lack of class. Mr. President, Barack Obama ran and won the election. In this case, the election was “staged” by the upper echelon at Hampton. It is a shame the things done in the dark

  12. Jesse says:

I’m not sure what the uproar is about the title Churchill used in the letter. Every world leader that I can think of is often referred to as Mr. or Mrs, such as Mr. Sarkozy, Mr. Yeltsin, Mr. Brown, or Mrs. Merkel.

In fact, like President Obama, Sarkozy, Yeltsin, and the rest are often referred to by their last name, just as Washington and Lincoln are often written about using just their last name and not with their title, “President.” Bush II, Clinton, Bush I, Reagan, and Carter have all been addressed as Mr. or without any title. Mr. JFK sounds downright strange.

I agree, though, that the girl in the pink dress should have won. =)

  13. I am Justice says:

Previously, I did not give my opinion as to who have won, but like the others and with Jesse I agree that the princess dime piece in the pink dress with the silky smooth skin should have won…:-)

  14. Queen Latisha says:

Gee, is this a rerun? Did she just play the (reverse) race card???? It appears that any one of us can stand there and say, “Oh, it’s nothing to do with race”…… that line isn’t to be believed when white people say it, so, why believe it when black people say it? Funny, how the tables get turned…….What’s the old saying? “Well, that’s the pot calling the kettle black?”
