DeeLove emailed me a few days ago to tell me she had heard word about Fantasia’s home going into foreclosure.
Of course my heart aches for her or anyone going through. However, as I researched I saw that she owns two homes and her money is “new money” so why did she feel the need to buy such a huge mansion?
Look at the picture below:

She is living above her means and why? Who is she tryng to impress?
When you have a home that large, you also need to furnish it. You need a staff to clean it and keep up the lawn. You need to pay those high utilities…..and taxes!
That house above is for folks who have serious, serious money and disposable income. That’s not a “new money” home.

I’m glad she at least has another home. It is sad that it seems the second one was way beyond her means and just for the purpose of ‘flossin’. She has actually been pretty successful and finished her run last year on Broadway in the hit play, “The Color Purple.” Following that, she continued to tour and dropped an album.
I also have to wonder though if this may have to do with her limited reading ability. I remember when it first came out that she was apparently illiterate and there was some talk that she couldn’t even read the contracts she was signing or the teleprompters with the lyrics for songs she did not know.
She later refuted those allegations and claimed she “just wasn’t a strong reader.” I beleive that she may have been pushed into saying this because it would look as though the American Idol folks and whoever was managing her, took advantage of her by having her sign things she could not read nor understand, and thereby subject them to legal liability.
I have to wonder though if she could read the fine print to know what owning a second home entailed and whether she was proactive in monitoring her accounting statements?
I’m not trying to down the sister and I actually admire the fact that she has reached the level of success in spite of her many obstacles in life. I just hope it opens the eyes of some who may want to follow in her footsteps and think that you can still make it and be fine without either knowing how to read or not being able to read that well.
I hate to sound negative BUT…I knew that she would lose that home when I first saw her at home on an interview. She is not that talented to maintain a home of that stature. Even if she was the music industry is not a reliable source of income. I know that the play did not pay that well either.
I do not know what’s wrong with our people. We all know that Ms. Fantasia came from humble beginning BUT why go so big? I feel sorry for her because she is not wise. Our community has a big problem with living welllllll beyond our means. We really need to deal with that. I say this in light of the Damon Dash article that Lynn posted earlier. WHY? Why? WHY?
Having a little money does not mean you have to spend it all. Fantasia is not mentally retarded, even if she is not a strong reader.
She has a lawyer, I am sure. Even I won’t read a long legal document. Too complicated. Words in legal documents are sometimes latin, etc. So mortgage brokers and lawyers that we can trust help us out with that stuff.
Fantasia knew how much her mortgage would be every month. Numbers are easy to read. She also knew how much her utilities would be, at least approximately. You don’t need to be a great reader to see numbers.
I don’t want anyone to lose their home. That must be horribly traumatic. But I like to see personal responsibility. TWO houses? Why not save some money so she can have a little nest egg? Why such a huge mansion? Again, her money is “new” money. Can you imagine the cost of upkeep on a home that size? And the cost to heat and furnish it?
It’s more than a notion.
@ Child of the Most High, She made boocoo bucks off that play. This wasn’t any old play either, it was Oprah Winfrey’s play. The tickets were between $80-225 to see that show. I saw the show twice and paid 80 for the cheapest seats both times. I also saw an ad recruiting children who could sing and dance to be in the play as part of the chorus (with Olivia’s children) and those children were promised earrings between $65-85 an HOUR. Fantasia was the headliner, so if some children with no speaking roles were earning nearly $100 bucks an hour for a 2- 1/2 hour show, we can only imagine what she earned doing that play for a year.
@ Lynn, I’m sure she does have a lawyer, but that doesn’t mean the lawyer is looking out for her best interests and not his own. I remember hearing both Steve Harvey and Chaka Khan saying that in the entertainment business it is important that you as the talent know how to read your own contracts and have some knowledge of basic legal terminology, because people will exploit you constantly if you don’t.
No, Fantasia is not retarded, but I am willing to bet that she probably left all of these decisions up to someone else and just went along with their recommendation instead of taking a more hands on and proactive approach.
I’m not willing to let her off the hook. There is a thing called personal responsibility.
No lawyer forced her to buy two houses and no lawyer or other handler was able to shield from her the cost of buying and upkeeping two houses.
My hope is that everything works out for her but she is solely responsible for this, as proven by the fact that her name is the one on the eviction notice.
I remember when Oprah first started her show in Chicago. Bill Cosby was on one day and he told her to sign “every” single check. You can’t leave bills up to attorneys and accountants to pay. You’ll be swindled so quickly.
The young, black celebs think success means 50 luxuary vehicles, a mansion or 3 and other wasteful, materialistic things.
Unfortunately, you can tell the celebs who never had to deal with a lot of money. Same thing with lottery winners who are broke in a year.
@ facts and Oprah learned very well from that lesson that Dr. Bill Cosby gave her. I read in this past June’s issue of Black Enterprise that Oprah gets 222 paychecks EVERY MONTH! Now that is a true business woman right there!
If she made so much money then why is she losing her home? The tickets may have cost a fortune but her cut may not have been that much. I will leave it as her not being wise. If she were wise then she would not have bought that huge home.
I’m sorry but you are all wrong for talking about her. She just came out in a rare interview about the whole foreclosure thing. You know, just because she’s a celebrity doesn’t mean she’s not human. She came out with this interview in May 2009 and explained the situation. You know, people don’t want to see her make it. People are just waiting to agree with whatever the news says. Who says they are accurate? I’d like to say more but I’m too saved and blessed to get besides myself.
Point black~ Fantasia is the hottest thing out there and she truly deserves it. She’s humble and loves to sing from the soul~onstage and at church. So, the next time you talk bad about someone, why don’t you at least be objective and fair. Don’t hate!! And this is not a Black Thing either!
Anyway, here’s the video: See for yourself the truth from the horse;s mouth!!
