Rev. Al Sharpton Calls for National Prayer Today at 3 pm for Sean Bell Verdict

May 07, 2008

 by Deputy Diva

The Reverend Al Sharpton called in the “Steve Harvey Morning Show” earlier this morning to announce that a prayer vigil will be held today throughout New York City, as well as in other major cities like Chicago and Atlanta to pray that justice will be served through the pending federal investigation of the case. He is also asking that those who are physically unable to attend one of the vigils still stand in prayer later today against police brutality and misconduct. Additionally, prayers for a hedge of protection around the community-at large against future incidents like these are very much needed and welcome.   The National Action Network’s website lists the following details:

Jay-Z and Beyonce’s Prenup Details

May 02, 2008

by Deputy Diva

 Beyonce and Jay-Z

In the past couple of days there have been rumors swirling that Beyonce’ is pregnant and this was one of the reasons behind the rushed and hushed secret wedding that reportedly took place on April 4, 2008.

The New York Daily News reports…

Beyoncé’s plans for both a career in A&R and a big family are progressing nicely, according to our sources. We hear that as the talent scout for hubby Jay-Z’s still-unconfirmed Carter Music Group, B has already received 82 demos at the office for her House of Dereon clothing line. But will her new job offer maternity leave? A pal is apparently telling friends that the diva is pregnant. Her reps didn’t return calls.   SOURCE

The National Enquirer and MediaTakeOut.com are reporting that the prenup between the power couple “calls for Jay Z (who is worth an estimated $650M) to pay Beyonce (worth an estimated $100M) $10 million if the marriage ends after 2 years, and $1 million a year for each further year she remains in the marriage, up to 15 years …

He promised to pay her an additional $5 million for each child she bears for him - for her loss of income during the pregnancy and child rearing years …

And Beyonce would be granted access to their private jet and fleet of cars, which includes a $1 million 1959 Rolls-Royce convertible”  Source

I am certainly not mad at them and wish them all the best. If they could make it this many years just dating, hopefully they will never have to use that prenuptual agreement.

Star Jones Files for Divorce Against Al Reynolds

April 23, 2008

I’m going to go on record and say that my heart aches for Star Jones and I’ll tell you why. Love is no joke. It’s hard to find. I’ll never forget how thrilled and elated she was when she thought that she finally had found the Prince in Shining Armor that most women long for. I was so genuinely happy for her!

Then I started hearing grumblings and rumors about her husband’s sexuality. Specifically, rumors that he is a homosexual or bisexual who was using her as a cover for his lifestyle. I hoped that it was not true, though I saw his outlandish outfits and peculiar quirks.

Now…after months of rumors and speculation, she has filed for divorce. Again, my heart goes out to her:

Three years after tying the knot in a spectacular, over-the-top affair that caused some backlash, Star Jones has decided to end her marriage to banker Al Reynolds.

The 46-year-old TV personality quietly filed divorce papers March 26 in New York Supreme Court in Manhattan. The records are sealed, syndicated entertainment show “Entertainment Tonight” reported Wednesday.

But a representative for SHADOW PR, which represents Jones, confirmed to The Associated Press that she is seeking to end the union.

In a statement to “Entertainment Tonight,” Jones said: “Several years ago I made an error in judgment by inviting the media into the most intimate area of my life. A month ago I filed for divorce.

“The dissolution of a marriage is a difficult time in anyone’s life that requires privacy with one’s thoughts. I have committed myself to handling this situation with dignity and grace and look forward to emerging from this period as a stronger and wiser woman.”

Albany Baby Falls From Window into Hands of Postal Worker

April 23, 2008

All over the nation there are children falling out of windows due to having dumb parents.

It happens here in Maryland all the time, particularly in spring and summer seasons. These people will open a window and walk away from it, knowing that they have one or more toddlers walking around. Sometimes the poor little toddler will survive. Sometimes they won’t.

This latest case of a child falling out of an open window happened in Albany, NY where there actually are no laws in place regarding open windows. As fate would have it, a postal worker was there to catch the falling child:

Gas Up to $4 per Gallon in New York

April 22, 2008

Long gone are the days of taking a ride for fun or a romantic stroll in the car. In New York, the gas is $4(+) per gallon and really, no one knows why. Americans are truly being duped:

The price for regular unleaded is one-tenth of one cent away from $4 a gallon at the Citgo station in West Harrison.

Cabbies here complain their take-home pay is thinner than it used to be. Trucking companies across the country are making drivers slow down to conserve fuel. Filling station owners plead that really, really, the skyrocketing prices aren’t their fault.

And the rest of us? With gas prices now averaging $3.50 a gallon nationwide, according to AAA and the Oil Price Information Service, more and more Americans who have to drive are weighing the need for each and every trip.

“To get to the doctors and all that, it’s an awful lot of money,” said Carol Licata, a 75-year-old retiree from Arnold, Pa., who said a larger portion of her fixed income is now going toward gas. “I don’t drive that often, but have to take necessary trips … and (gas) takes a big chunk out of our budget.”

Some would-be drivers are considering less energy-dependent alternatives simply for money’s sake.

In Los Angeles, for example, fiction writer Brian Edwards sold his gas-guzzling Ford truck and now relies on his skateboard or the bus to get around.

Twenty Haitians Drown En Route to U.S.

April 21, 2008

It’s interesting that 20 human beings whose skin happens to be dark can drown and not one news outlet cares enough to televise this. Would we have this same level of silence if a Cuban were to die out there?

I’ve always had a problem with the fact that while Cubans are given free access to this country, Haitians are turned away repeatedly. Why? Skin not light enough? Hair not straight enough? Mexicans can come into this country, join gangs and commit all types of horrible crimes and are protected. Yet, let a black person try to get in here!

Haitians fleeing their impoverished homeland met tragedy when their boat went down off the Bahamas, killing at least 20 people and leaving only three known survivors, including an alleged migrant smuggler, authorities said Monday.

Survivors said the boat was carrying 24 people when it capsized Saturday night, according to U.S. Coast Guard spokesman Luis Diaz in Miami. Just before dawn Sunday, fishermen heard screams.

Volunteers searched for bodies, tying life preservers onto them so they could be recovered by the U.S. Coast Guard, said Chris Lloyd of the Bahamas Air Sea Rescue Association.

“We recovered as many as we could,” Lloyd said.

The migrants appeared to be aiming for U.S. shores. The accident happened less than 150 miles from Miami, said Chief Petty Officer Ralph McKinney of the Royal Bahamas Defense Force. The boat had set out from Nassau and was supposed to stop in Bimini en route to Florida, he said.

Two Haitian survivors — a man and a woman — were being treated at a Nassau hospital for dehydration. The third survivor, a Honduran marine mechanic, was taken into police custody as authorities investigate smuggling allegations, McKinney said.

The two Haitian survivors identified the Honduran as the sunken vessel’s captain, Lloyd said.

Haitian Ambassador Louis Harold Joseph said he had not yet received confirmation that everyone who died was Haitian. But he expressed doubt that the voyage was connected to recent Haitian food riots in which at least seven people died.

He said he was talking to leaders of the Haitian community in the Bahamas to see if they could help identify the victims or provide information about the voyage. But he said he didn’t expect much.

“People who participate in smuggling operations generally they don’t talk, they don’t provide information,” Joseph said in a phone interview.

Survivors described the boat as a go-fast, suggesting the migrants had more money than others who make the perilous crossing jammed aboard makeshift vessels.

The Coast Guard has been on alert for a spike in migration following riots earlier this month in the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, but so far none has appeared. So far this year, 737 Haitians have been intercepted, compared to 1,583 for 2007, according to the Coast Guard.
