As I have reported several times here, Black Entertainment Television (BET) had planned to produce a show called Hot Ghetto Mess. The show is based on the Ghetto Mess website (which gets many of its offensive pictures from a racist website called Niggermania).The purpose of the Ghetto Mess website is to humiliate members of the population who are ignorant, uneducated or insane.  As a direct result of that proposed program, blog posts started to appear all over the internet bashing the show and its premise. News outlets caught on. The story received national media attention.Because of how impressed I was with the united front, I devoted several articles to the cause (this blog is less than two weeks old as of this writing). In addition, I twice contacted a writer at Washington Post to share my outrage about the fact that they were giving favorable coverage to BET regarding this offensive situation—helping BET defend the indefensible.In the back of mind, though, I must admit I was a little nervous because the person leading the movement against BET had admitted to having the attention span of a gnat. Oops. That’s not good. My hope was that BET would hold her attention at least until this situation reached a conclusion that made sense.

Wishful thinking on my part. I was surprised yesterday to discover that after all the hoopla, outrage, and media attention, BET pulled a pimp move that would have impressed even Iceberg Slim—and even they must be surprised that their cheap move actually was enough to blow out the flames of the fire created by those who stood against BET.

Now I’ve got to re-examine the strength of the flames. What I thought was a forest fire apparently was all smoke and mirrors. It wasn’t a forest fire after all. In fact, it was a camp fire, at best.

Here is the pimp move that BET made. To shut everyone up, they offered to change their show’s name from Hot Ghetto Mess to We’ve Got to Do Better. Keep in mind that the show’s contents will still serve to humiliate blacks. It will still show all the underbellies of black society. It will still showcase the black underclass for the expressed purpose of mockery.

The leader of the BET attack indicated that the name change is sufficient in her mind because it serves to remove all connections of the show to the Ghetto Mess website. Oops again! The website is called Hot Ghetto Mess – We have to do better. So…BET dropped part of the name but retained the other half. That means that the connection to the website is alive and quite well.

Have you ever been the victim of a magician’s smoke and mirrors scam? Can you imagine thinking you are witnessing a forest fire only to realize that it’s a scampy camp fire? Well, I guess short attention spans and a pimp called BET will serve us anything, huh?
