Something serious had to have come to light before hand. The fact that the source article even says that the bride was: <blockquote>"not entirely caught off-guard," </blockquote> indicates to me that she somehow compromised their relationship and caused him to feel betrayed. I don't know any bride who could experience the embarassment and humiliation of being stood up at a $200 wedding, let alone a $2 MILLION dollar wedding and then behave as though she expected it to happen.
