During the Grammy awards, Beyonce referred to Tina Turner as a queen. I’m certain she was reading from a tele-prompter but either way, there is nothing wrong with calling Tina a queen.
In response, Aretha Franklin (queen of “soul”) became offended and actually called Beyonce out about it. Apparently she believes that she owns the term, queen. Here is the statement that Aretha lowered herself to make:
“I am not sure of whose toes I may have stepped on or whose ego I may have bruised between the Grammy writers and Beyonce. However, I dismissed it as a cheap shot for controversy.”
That, in my opinion, was silly. Mathew Knowles agrees:
Mathew Knowles is a little upset over Aretha Franklin taking offense to his daughter Beyonce using the word “queen” during her Grammy performance with Tina Turner.
In a statement released Wednesday, Papa Knowles said he will not allow Beyonce to even comment about the uproar.
“As a manager I am not taking something this ridiculous to Beyonce,” Knowles stated. “Beyonce referred to Tina Turner as a ‘queen.’ Not queen of gospel, queen of soul, queen of blues, Queen of England. I consider my wife a queen and sometimes call her that. Does Aretha have a problem with that?”
In his statement, Mathew Knowles responded:
Something this ridiculous – it’s childish, it’s unprofessional. And it’s a sad day when egos get bruised because somebody used the word king, queen, prince or princess.
I agree with you, Mr. Knowles!

WOW! I didn’t realize Aretha Franklin had the exclusive rights to the word/title “Queen.” Too much ego!
I guess Ree Ree is going to be mad with me too.
I take it Diva’s will be Diva’s
[...] I talked about the fact that Aretha had called out Beyonce for referring to Tina Turner as a “queen”. I thought it was inappropriate. I love Aretha [...]
Ree Ree was wrong for this. She made herself look absolutely foolish. I’m glad someone soothed her big ole ego and gave her the new title of ‘EMPRESS’.
Beyonce should have questioned the term, “Queen” immediately after she read the copy. Aretha Franklin was sitting in the audience and is known, world-wide, as “The Queen,” “Queen of Soul,” “Lady Soul,” etc. Just think if James Brown was sitting there and somebody introduced Tom Jones as “The Godfather” or “The Godfather of Soul”? He wouldn’t have liked it, either.
Beyonce and her father had better be glad that it was Aretha who was insulted and not “The Queen of the Blues,” the temperamental diva, DINAH WASHINGTON! That diva would not only have cussed Beyonce AND her father out, they might have gotten slapped too!
Aretha, I felt, was gracious, but serious. People on the Net seem to think she should have just kept her mouth shut. People, Aretha worked long land hard for her title! That girl was dodging bullets traveling through the South as a teenager to make it easier for shake dancers like Beyonce to do their thing on TV today. Miss Franklin has been in the trenches. She deserves the RESPECT she gets all over the world.
Plus, Tina Turner is a diva herself. She doesn’t need to be introduced under some other diva’s moniker. Beyonce should have said, “here she is, The Queen of Rock, Tina Turner.” When she yelled “the queen” a lot of people expected Aretha to walk out.
I think they owe both Aretha and Tina an apology.
