Pepsi is the latest company to change its coloring formulation in response to a report released on March 5th by the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CPSI). The CPSI reported that their chemical analyses found levels of a known animal carcinogen called 4-methylimidazole (4-MI) in Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, Pepsi-Cola and Diet Pepsi. Pepsico announced the change in manufacturing of its caramel coloring in order to avoid their products carrying a “cancer-causing” label as a result of a California law.
The Coca-Cola Company has also changed its coloring formulation in order to meet the requirements of the State of California. However, the beverage company fired a shot at CPSI. Their spokesman, Ben Scheilder commented, “Unlike CSPI, The Coca-Cola Company deals in hard facts. Fact: The body of science about 4-MEI in foods or beverages does not support the erroneous allegations that CSPI would like the public to believe. The 4-MEI levels in our products pose no health or safety risks. Outside of California, no regulatory agency concerned with protecting the public’s health has stated that 4-MEI is a human carcinogen.”
