Alicia Keys to Play Lena Horne

Oprah Winfrey has taken control of the long-gestating Lena Horne biopic and has cast Alicia Keys in the title role.

We’re going to start filming next year, and we’ve got Alicia, Oprah reportedly told the New York Post column during an interview for her film “The Great Debaters.”

You know what? I actually would have liked to have seen an unknown get and play this part. I just don’t see Alicia in this role. But we’ll see.

As far as looks go, I can see Alicia pulling this off.

I can see it too. She’s been in quite a few music videos now and in a few movies “The Nanny Diaries” and “Smoking Aces.” You know she has to do an outstanding job if Oprah pretty much handpicked her for this project.

Well, if Halle Berry could pull of Dorothy Dandridge and never sing a note…then Alicia, who is at least that capable, should be able to channel Lena Horne.

Alicia isn’t necessarily known for being a “perfect” singer, but Lena Horne wasn’t either. She’s more so known for her style and ability to be provocatively appealing to the white and black audiences of her time.

Don’t get me wrong, Lena is an accomplished artist, as is Alicia…but they stay within their range and aren’t out there trying to be the next 5 octave sensation.

I’d prefer an known actress too, but other than Alicia Keys is there another performer that could fit the role? Anyone can pick Beyonce or Halle. But how about some others.

anyone

anyone

I guess since Halle is pregnant that is sort of out of the question.

Thandie Newton maybe???

Well! what about Janet Jackson? She has the look,(I know she is not as lite as Alica Keys, I know that Lena Horne were consider a red bone) Janet has the bone structure, she has the voice range.

Beware of what is presented in the media. I don’t care if it’s Oprah whose got some money in this B.S.

There is an element in our society that will resort to anything in order to degrade these Black women (there by degrading Black people as a whole) in the entertainment industry by showing them in bed with White men.

Sure Lena is great….but she went for whitey. Major point loss in my book. I mean why marry people who drained pools even after your light, bright, dam near white family members
took a swim in their pools?

I did like her in “Cabin in the Sky” and “Stormy Weather”. excellent flicks and highly recommended.

Escaped Slave,

As always you bring out interesting points. I’ve often wondered why—as beautiful as Lena Horne was, men such as Harry Belafonte and Sidney Poitier did not snatch her up? Instead, they went chasing after “other” women.

Escaped Slave, you have made some very interesting comments. I am going to have to read up on the pool draining comment.
