African American Atheists?
“Doubts about religion? You’re one of many.”
The slogan on billboards in half a dozen American cities in February, including one in Dallas, is intended to draw African Americans to an organization touting secular humanism.
The African American Humanists, a project of the Council for Secular Humanism, launched the billboard campaign targeting blacks in late January. The advertising coincides with Black History Month and uses images of historical, so-called “humanist” African Americans as examples of “free thinkers” who did not conform to traditional religious expectations within their communities. The faces of contemporary activists are posted next to their bygone counterparts.
The Dallas billboard is at the intersection of Interstate 35 East and Illinois in the south Oak Cliff area. In addition to Dallas, similar billboards appeared this month in New York, Chicago, Atlanta, and Durham, N.C.
Not surprisingly, the billboards have garnered criticism from black clergy, with several television news stations interviewing pastors of churches in south Dallas, an area with a large black population.
Everyone has the right to choose Heaven. Everyone has the right to choose hell. There actually are some black atheists out here choosing hell? Go on with your bad self!

The firm foundation and cornerstone of our African American culture has been our faith in Jesus Christ. It’s very sad to see that there is actually an organization that is trying to destroy that very foundation.
I wonder what made these people ‘become’ atheist? I say ‘become’ because I’m sure these black men and women weren’t raised to believe there is no God. I’m lead to believe that something has cause these people to stray away from the Truth.
2 Timothy 4:4 “And they will turn away their ears from the truth and will be turned to myths.”
All the corruption that’s going on in the church today may be partly responsible for leading many away from God.
Reminds me of something the late Paul Little said that happened to him. Little was a campus speaker for Intervarsity Christian Fellowship. He was speaking on a campus, and during the question and answer period after his speech, an atheist student kept hitting him with questions, demanding proof that God exits. Paul Little asked the student, ” If I could prove to you that God exists, would you then become a Christian?” The student replied, “No!” When Little asked the student why he wouldn’t convert, the student replied, “It would require me to make too many changes in my life!” Not all atheists refuse to believe in God because they see no evidence, or because of church corruption (hey, we don’t quit voting because of some of the clowns currently running our government!) They refuse to believe because believing means surrendering their lives to God and changing their behavior (repent and forsake sin) –and they don’t want to do that. Paul Little left us an excellent book, “Know Why You Believe” published by Intervarsity. I highly recommend it.
