There are certain things I wish I knew more about. Jazz is one of them. When I do listen to jazz, it has a calming effect on me. I read online today that an important milestone in jazz history is upon us. It’s the 50th anniversary of Miles Davis’ masterpiece album, Kind of Blue. Again, I really wish I knew enough about jazz to comprehend why and what made it so classic, masterful and the best selling jazz album of all time, but I’ll just take the word of those who know for sure:
The original album (only 37 minutes) has had a huge impact that extended beyond jazz to other genres — from rock musicians such as the Allman Brothers and Carlos Santana to minimalist composers like Steve Reich and Philip Glass.
“Miles’ genius was that he was able to keep the quality of the creativity very high and at the same time make a work of art that communicated broadly,” said pianist Chick Corea.

One of my favorite artists. I miss him deeply!
One of my favorites was So What.. a classic
I think the attraction of Kind of Blue is that Miles knew how to create “mood” with his compositions. He did it in a subtle way and although his methods were subtle, they spoke volumes and transported the listener (especially me) to a much more pleasant place. It was like traveling, to some locale, via musical notes. For example, on “All Blues”, I felt like I was on a cross country train ride with a glass of wine and totally relaxed watching the scenery going by. Ok, I’m stepping down off of my escapist soapbox…..
2thehilt,
Where in the heck have you been????
Okay, I’ve got to go out and purchase that CD. I love the descriptions you all are giving!
Hey Lynn:
To answer your question: You know how the Bible says that “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning”? Well, I’ve been trying to hold on and make it through a very long night. But thank God, I’m still here. I will do better about coming home to Hicktown more often. Promise! : )
2TheHilt,
I am happy you mentioned that. There is so much negativity and pain in the world and amongst Hicktowners that I need to make a conscious effort to blog some positive and uplifting stories.
That way, those of you who come here who are going through will be lifted at least a little.
Some time this weekend I will write an inspirational article because I’m sure others are going through also.
I sent my husband a video earlier today of a group in Australia who were wearing blackface and mocking Michael Jackson. Harry Connick, Jr. confronted them about it and gave their “show” a score of zero. My husband asked me if I were going to publish the video and I told him “no” because we need more positive.
Hi Lynn, I have seen the video yu refer to on another blog.
Apparently, the act was a tribut to the Jacksons. The Jacksons should sue this show for every cent that they can.
In Australia, I expect no less anyway, especially after killing off nearly all the Aborigie population. In their TV shows aired all over the world, they don’t have one single Black person in representation. So, to make up for this, they have to paint their own faces with Tar and jump around like a bunch of buffoons.
Now, to think, the guys acting like such a bunch of clowns are all so called medical professionals who should have more sense and intellect, or so you would have thought.
I’m not really sure what is happening with your blog, but each time I post, there appears to be letters missing, making it look as though I can’t spell.
MOS,
I have not had the spelling issue thus far but I’ll watch for it.
